Family Education Night
TIME: 2 hour-long sessions, one from 5:30-6:30pm and one from 7:00-8:00pm, both in person in the studio. Childcare will be provided.
Dear Walden Families,
As many of you heard at the Town Hall, there were several incidents of racism at Walden this school year, and as part of our responses, the Collective is holding workshops in support of a safe community all Walden Community. We are planning to continue with a series of required workshops for all families next school year, however we recognize that even members of our community who are leaving are part of the Walden community, and their role in these conversations are essential for repairing the harm caused to our safe space this year. We have a desire to make space for healing and supporting conversations at home and at Walden that can help combat the pervasiveness of white supremacy. We are requiring attendance by all Collective members, and strongly encourage attendance from other staff and at least one family member, but especially Upper Group and Middle Group families.
We have decided on Henriette Selestine from Mama Let’s Read to work with us, and she is great. She is working on a dissertation about curriculum around how to teach young people how to be upstanders in the age of social media. I think she will be amazing for family and staff education.
The goals of the workshop are:
- How to have a conversation with kids about racism
- How to have a conversation with kids about complex topics
- How to educate yourself before you start a conversation with children
The format: Presentation, then small discussion groups, then sharing of resources.
SAVE THE DATE! Next Thursday, May 30. We will offer 2 hour-long sessions, one from 5:30-6:30pm and one from 7:00-8:00pm, both in person in the studio. Childcare will be provided.
Please make time to attend to demonstrate our care for our BIPOC community members, and a dedication to creating an anti-racist Walden both on campus and beyond.
RSVP here to sign up for one of the sessions, and to let us know how many kids will need childcare. Each session is capped at 40 participants.
